AI Mode is Google’s full-page conversational search. It passed 1 billion monthly users in May 2026. Unlike an AI Overview, it keeps the conversation going. Each follow-up question (“weekend availability?”, “storage?”, “under $1,500?”) narrows the list of movers. In an August 2026 study, 79.8% of AI Mode’s local citations came from Google Maps and Business Profile data. AI Overviews cited business websites 70.7% of the time.

Most moving company owners treat “AI search” as one thing. It isn’t. When someone types “best movers in Austin” into Google, an AI Overview gives them a single snapshot at the top of the results. Google AI Mode does something different: it opens a full-page conversation, and the customer keeps asking. Which of these do weekend moves? Which ones have storage? Who can do a 2-bedroom for under $1,500? Every answer removes movers from the list. This guide explains how Google AI Mode works, how it differs from AI Overviews, and what your moving company needs in place to survive each follow-up question.

What is Google AI Mode?

Google AI Mode is a conversational search experience that lives in its own tab, separate from the regular results page. Instead of ten blue links, the customer gets a written answer, a list of cited sources, and a box to ask the next question. At Google I/O in May 2026, Google said AI Mode had passed 1 billion monthly users and switched its default model to Gemini 3.5 Flash. Searches in AI Mode run two to three times longer than traditional queries, because people describe their whole situation: dates, home size, budget, and special items.

How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?

Both use Gemini, but they are separate systems with separate source lists. Victorious compared 1,540 queries and found that only 30–35% of URLs cited in AI Overviews also appeared in AI Mode. Not one query produced identical citation lists. So a moving company that shows up in AI Overviews can’t assume it shows up in AI Mode. If you’ve already worked on showing up in AI Overviews, treat AI Mode as a second, separate channel.

Google AI Mode answers in a full-page conversation, and every follow-up question narrows the list of movers.

How does AI Mode choose which mover to recommend?

The biggest difference for movers is the conversation. An AI Overview is judged once. In AI Mode, your moving company is judged again with every follow-up question, and each one can remove you from the shortlist.

The first answer is a wide shortlist

The opening answer to “movers in Austin” usually names several companies, mostly pulled from Google Business Profile data: category, service area, hours, rating, and review count. At this stage, most established movers with a complete profile make the list.

Each follow-up question removes movers

Here is an illustrative example of how a typical customer conversation narrows the field, and which piece of your data each question tests:

Customer’s follow-up What AI Mode looks for Where that data lives
“Which of these do weekend moves?” Saturday and Sunday hours GBP hours, website contact page
“Which ones offer storage?” A clear storage service GBP services list, a dedicated storage page
“Who can do a 2-bedroom under $1,500?” Published price ranges Pricing or cost page, FAQ, reviews that mention price
“Which one is best with pianos?” Specialty service proof Service page, reviews mentioning piano moves

A mover that lists weekend hours but has no storage page drops out at question two. A mover that says “call for pricing” drops out at question three. By the fourth answer, AI Mode may recommend one or two companies, and the customer calls the first one.

Why AI Mode answers change between searches

AI Mode is volatile. When SE Ranking ran the same 10,000 keywords three times on the same day, only 9.2% of cited URLs matched across all three tests. One screenshot showing your company in an AI Mode answer proves very little. The goal is to appear across many versions of the same conversation, which only happens when your data answers every likely follow-up.

For local searches, AI Mode leans on Business Profile and Maps data, including your reviews.

What does AI Mode cite for moving companies?

For local searches, AI Mode leans heavily on Google’s own data. Steady Demand’s August 2026 study of about 4,000 local service queries found that 79.8% of AI Mode citations pointed to Google Maps or Business Profile data. AI Overviews went the other way: 70.7% of their local citations pointed to the business’s own website.

Outside Google, the same third-party sites keep appearing in home-services answers. A May 2026 Cheers analysis listed Yelp, Reddit, Angi, BBB, YouTube, HomeAdvisor, and Facebook among the most-cited domains. For movers, that means your reviews and directory listings can do more work in AI Mode than your blog does. The way Google interprets reviews for moving companies can influence how clearly those third-party signals reinforce your reputation.

How should movers prepare for AI Mode?

Preparing for AI Mode means answering the follow-up questions before the customer asks them. Start with these six steps:

  1. Fill in every Business Profile field a follow-up could test. Hours for every day, every service you offer, including storage, packing, and specialty moves, service area, and attributes should all be complete and accurate. Consistent Google Business Profile management for movers helps keep those details aligned with the signals Google may use during follow-up searches.
  2. Publish price ranges. AI Mode can’t recommend you for “under $1,500” if it can’t find a number. Even a range by home size helps. Here’s why “call for pricing” scares off modern moving customers.
  3. Make service and service-area pages answer specific constraints. Name the neighborhoods, the weekend availability, the building types, and the specialty items you handle. Strong service area pages give AI Mode the details it needs to keep you on the list.
  4. Keep your business information identical everywhere. Your name, address, phone, and services should match on Yelp, BBB, Angi, and your website. Conflicting details give AI Mode a reason to pick someone else.
  5. Add structured data. Schema markup for moving companies labels your services, service area, and reviews in a format machines read directly.
  6. Test on a schedule. Pick five real customer conversations, such as “movers in [city]” followed by weekend, storage, and price questions. Run them in AI Mode once a month and note where you drop out.

Most of this work also strengthens regular local rankings, which is why the shift from GEO vs. SEO for moving companies is less about replacing traditional search tactics and more about adapting them for AI-driven discovery. SE Ranking’s AI Mode research study also shows how the sources surfaced in AI Mode can differ from standard organic results.

Will AI Mode start calling movers for quotes?

Not yet, but it’s heading that way. At I/O 2026, Google expanded its agentic calling feature, where Google’s AI calls businesses on a customer’s behalf to check prices and availability, to home repair, beauty, and pet care in the US. Moving isn’t on that list today. If it’s added, a missed call won’t just mean losing one lead; it could become a missing piece in the comparison Google presents to the customer. That makes the balance between live chat vs. calls for moving companies even more important as AI takes a bigger role in how customers contact and compare providers.

Is your moving company ready for Google AI Mode?

Google AI Mode rewards the moving company that survives the whole conversation, not the one that ranks first for a single search. That means a complete Business Profile, published prices, consistent listings, and service pages that answer specific questions. If you want to know where your company drops out of AI Mode answers today, Movers Development can test your key conversations and show you what to fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Google AI Mode the same as AI Overviews?

No. AI Overviews are short AI answers shown above regular search results. AI Mode is a separate, full-page conversational search where users ask follow-up questions. Studies show the two cite different sources: only 30–35% of URLs overlap between them.

How do I get my business to show up in Google AI Mode?

Complete every field in your Google Business Profile, keep your business details consistent across directories, publish clear service and pricing information on your website, and collect detailed reviews. For local searches, AI Mode relies mostly on Business Profile and Maps data.

Does AI Mode use Google Business Profile?

Yes. In an August 2026 study of about 4,000 local service queries, 79.8% of AI Mode citations pointed to Google Maps or Business Profile data. Hours, services, service area, and reviews all feed the answers.

Is AI Mode replacing regular Google search?

Not entirely. AI Mode is a separate tab, and regular results still exist. But with more than 1 billion monthly users as of May 2026, it's now a major way people search, especially for longer, more detailed questions.
